The newest version of SharePoint Team Services has just been
released by Microsoft. There are so many changes and
improvements Microsoft has completely renamed the product.
It is now called "Windows SharePoint Services" or WSS.
WSS is a complete web
hosting environment for creating and managing fully automated,
database-driven web sites. Microsoft promotes using it
for collaboration and teamwork. Within minutes you can
be using a web site with per-user logins, password protected
areas, online discussion/bulletin boards, document libraries,
picture/image libraries, and a complete
announcements/notices/events subsystem - without installing a
single script or writing a single line of code!
WSS can be configured and
controlled with only a web browser. This empowers both the
designer and the users/contributors to quickly and easily add
content, update the site, and use it as a virtual meeting place
on the web. Some companies have spent thousands of dollars
on expensive "Portal" software or custom development and have
achieved less capability than the built-in features of WSS.
As an added bonus, WSS is
based on a superset of Microsoft FrontPage 2003 - sophisticated
customization, style sheets, and even full-blown ASP.NET
development can be mixed and matched with the browser-based WSS
ready-to-use features. (If you think FrontPage is "web
design for dummies" then you really should give it a second look
-- it is MUCH different than the original FrontPage '97 from
seven years ago.)
The hardest thing
about WSS is understanding what you can do with it. Need
a chat board/discussion system? - it's built-in. Need a
site for posting news, announcements, and contact lists? -
done! Want to share wedding photos or baby pix? - no
problem! Need a blogging system that allows non-computer
experts to publish their own online daily/weekly/monthly web
diaries without learning MySQL and installing complicated
scripts or writing your own? - been there, done that!

TIPS:
Whitelist and spam folder options for junkmail |
For users of our
server-based spam blocking services (which is included with our
Platinum WebMail or anti-spam option) we have added two new tools for better
control over spam blocking.
The personal whitelist allows
each user to create their own list of email addresses that will
be always be allowed and never blocked. With a
personalized whitelist, you can insure that important email from
a business partner, client, or even a promotional mailer that
you wish to receive will not be flagged or blocked.
With our new spam folder
option, you can request that suspected spam emails be redirected
into their own email folder rather than completely blocked.
By segregating spam into another folder, you can still quickly
review your inbox without having to wade through hundreds of
junkmail messages.
On a regular basis (daily or
weekly) you can review the spam folder and see if any "false
positives" are lurking there and then purge all the other junk.
Email subfolders, including
this spam folder, can be easily manipulated using either WebMail
or any IMAP-compatible email program (Outlook, Outlook Express,
Eudora, Entourage, etc.) Because subfolder management is
not part of most POP-based email programs, this technique is
best used if you use WebMail, have your email
configured for IMAP, or are comfortable making the appropriate
configuration changes.

It's simple to do but often
overlooked: Update your web site's
copyright date. Just bump it up from 2003 to 2004.
Take a close look the next time you're online -- it's
amazing how many sites still say "copyright 2001" and haven't
been changed in years!
It's a great low-key way
to freshen the content on your site. Sure, we all want
to constantly update our sites and keep our visitors
interested, but this is one technique you can do now and put
right on your "done" task list instead of the bottom of your
"todo" list!
