Last week we completed the installation of a brand new dedicated MySql database server.  This provides increased performance and continued reliability for database-driven web sites.

What's a "database-driven" web site?  It's a web site where some or all of the web pages you see in your web browser are created automatically, on-the-fly, from data stored in a database.  A typical example might be a product list on your site with product name, ordering code, and price.  Instead of actually putting all this information on a webpage in your site using regular html (web editing language), a dynamic webpage has special codes that tell the server to pull that information from a database table and insert it into the webpage before showing it to the visitor.

Think of it as a "mail merge" for web sites.  By storing your product data in a database instead of in the web pages themselves, you can easily update your product data separately.  Simply log-in to a private, password protected web form, change your product data, and automatically your web site will show the new information.

MySql server is one of the most popular database servers used for creating these kinds of web sites.  Thousands (millions?) of websites small and large rely on MySql for managing the data that drives their site.

Online chat rooms, bulletin boards, ecommerce stores, and the very popular personal diaries known as web logs or "blogs" all use a database behind the scenes to make it all work.

In the past few months more of our clients have been implementing these features on their website so we have invested in this new server to continue to provide high-performance but affordable database hosting using MySql.

Does this sound like you - stumbling through your web browser bookmarks you finally find the link to that interesting site you visited briefly a few months ago and pledged to revisit when you had more time. But when you click on it, much to your chagrin, the site is no longer there.

We found the perfect solution for this problem.  A while ago we purchased Adobe Acrobat (the full version) so we could convert documents to pdf files and email them to our clients.  After using the program for several months, we stumbled upon the added feature that allows you to create a pdf file of some or all of any website.

It is really easy to use and as an added bonus, after you create the pdf which you can save indefinitely, you can also print out the pages.  Because of the built-in scaling and font magic in Adobe Acrobat, sites that never printed right when you try to print directly from your web browser now print perfectly on 8.5 x 11" standard size paper.

You do need to purchase the full version of Adobe Acrobat.  The free edition that you probably already have for reading pdf files does not have this capability.  In our experience, it is well worth the price and has been invaluable for saving documents that later become part of the "disappearing world-wide web".
