Sometimes, yesterday's advice is no longer right.  In the past, many people have recommended using a "catchall" email alias to direct all incoming email to one actual mailbox.

This feature, which quickly became a "must have" for anyone buying a web hosting or email account, allows a website owner to invent email addresses on-the-fly without any configuration or special effort.

A quick example: Your domain name is mysite.com and your official email address on your business cards is george@mysite.com.  You therefore have a mailbox called george@mysite.com and use that to send and receive all your email.

With a "catchall" alias activated, you can simply use any other email name you want at any time.  If you sign-up for a sports newsletter, you might simply subscribe with the email address mysportsnews@mysite.com or perhaps junkIaskedFor@mysite.com

In the past, using different aliases for subscriptions or posting to public sites has actually been a recommended technique to control junk mail.

The downside to having a "catchall" alias is that in addition to the mail you want, anything directed to your domain will arrive in your in-box.  Spammers have caught on to this and very often launch a spam attack by sending email to every possible name.

They literally have a computer churn out junkmail addressed to alfred@mysite.com, barry@mysite.com, clyde@mysite.com, etc. bombarding your mail account with thousands of phony usernames.

There is a straightforward solution to this problem.  Disable the "catchall" alias and create individual aliases as needed.  So if you subscribe to a newsletter as mysportsnews@mysite.com, login to the WebMail control panel and create the specific alias for "mysports".  It only takes a few moments to do that and all of our email accounts support unlimited aliases so you can create as many as your need.

If you currently have a "catchall" alias, for the few weeks or month, look at all your incoming mail and each time you see a message that was sent to one of your aliases, login to the WebMail control panel and create that alias.  After the appropriate length of time you will have seen all your important aliases and then you can disable the "catchall" setting.
