| In this example, we are using a website called "www.spody.com" and a user called "mike". Be sure and substitute the name of your actual website and email that was provided to you.
Public E-Mail Address:
This is what you should give out to everyone as your new E-Mail address. You can put this on your business cards, letterhead, envelopes, and of course, on your website itself.
Private Mailbox Name:
This is what you should enter into your E-Mail software program when it asks for a "username" or "mailbox" name or something similar. Please note that in the past you may have simply entered "mike". With our mail server, it is important than you enter the full mailbox name "mike%spody.com" or it will not work properly.
Incoming Mail Server:
This is also known by the technical term "POP Server" or "POP3 Server". This is the name of the server your E-Mail software must check to pick-up your new messages.
(Advanced users may select IMAP protocol
instead).
Outgoing Mail Server:
This is also known by the technical term "SMTP Server". This is the name of the server your E-Mail software must use to deliver your outgoing messages.
Outbound Security ("Authentication"):
In our on-going battle against unsolicited commercial E-mail (SPAM), we have added an additional security check when sending E-mail which requires your software to send your username and password before being able to send mail. Be sure and configure your software to identify yourself by selecting "My outbound server requires authentication" in your E-mail software.
ISP Mail Server Blocking:
Due to significant amounts of unsolicited commercial E-Mail, or "SPAM", most ISP's will not let you access a 3rd party outbound mail server while you are accessing the Internet via their connection.
Simply set your outbound SMTP Server to your ISP's outbound server. This "split configuration" will have your E-Mail software retrieving your mail from your domain POP server (mail.yourdomain.com) and sending your outbound mail to your ISP's SMTP server (smtp.mycurrentisp.com) for final delivery.
Typical settings for the outbound SMTP
mail server of popular ISP's:
Earthlink:
mail.earthlink.net
Netzero: smtp.netzero.net
